China: New season lotus roots hit the market with high prices

Some low-lying farmland were flooded due to last week's torrential rain, resulting in a reduced vegetable production in the affected regions. Moreover, the period between the end of June and early July is a transition period for vegetable supplies and some early varieties are nearing the end of their seasons, while late varieties are not yet available, spurring vegetable prices to rise sharply this week.

The price of lotus roots continues to rise, mainly because they were affected by the cold weather at the beginning of the year. Lotus roots came onto the market nearly ten days later than expected. Currently, the new season supplies have only been available for a short time, therefore, the purchase price is high and the market supply is insufficient. It is expected that the lotus root prices should fall as production increases in the later period.
