The lychee is a high-quality specialty fruit from Guangdong, whose planting area and production volume both rank the highest in China. During this year's lychee growing period, due to weather conditions and this year being an off year, different varieties experienced various degrees of production drop, spurring lychee prices to hike up, reaching a record high in twenty years. The returns of local lychee farmers this year are not lower than last year, on the contrary, their lychees have performed better and been sold farther afield.
According to the data provided by the Yangjiang Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Areas, the city's lychee growing area this year is at 306,300 mu, generally on par with last year. However, the total lychee production last year reached 79,900 tons, while it’s only 52,000 tons this year, dropping by more than 30%. Production volumes of Nuomici and Guiwei varieties have dropped by 90%.
