China: Cherries from Yantai, Shandong, encounters poor sales

In most parts of China, fruit prices this year are significantly higher. However, since the end of June, fruit from various origins have become available on the market one after another, and a new market scenario has occurred where fruit farmers have left crops unharvested, while supermarket fruit prices remain high. Recently, a netizen from Yantai, Shandong, reported that a large volume of cherries grown by fruit farmers became available in the wholesale market and encountered very poor sales.

According to the analysis of experts, there are several reasons for the current poor sales. First of all, there’s a big cherry crop this year. Also, cherries cannot be transported over long distances, therefore, the supply of local cherries has exceeded the local consumption capacity, resulting in oversupply, which is the main reason for poor sales. In addition, in order to get the most profits, fruit growers followed the trend blindly to grow cherries, which unfortunately did not result in good returns but losses.
