China: Classifying blueberry varieties is key to our success

“Under normal weather conditions, the blueberry season in the Rizhao production area of Shandong province kicks off around April each year and lasts until July. Currently, domestic blueberries are in short supply. This is partly due to the fact that consumers are more aware of the characteristics of blueberries, including their high nutritional values. On the other hand, with the improvement in planting technologies and the full-scale implementation of our standardized management, the quality of blueberries has been greatly improved. ” Candice from Rizhao Meimeida Raspberries shared.

“In recent years, after gaining insights into the huge market potential of blueberries, more and more companies have started to grow and sell blueberries in China. As a result, the total supply of blueberries is increasing year by year. The overall price of blueberries is also falling compared with a few years ago, which to a certain extent is better meeting the growing demand of consumers, but has also brought many unfavorable market effects. In particular, the current market pricing is uneven. ”

“We have two large blueberry production centers in Rizhao, Shandong, China, with a total area of more than 2,000 mu. Compared with last year, our blueberry production has increased by 2.5 times this year. There are two main reasons for this increase. First of all, the fruit trees in our orchards have entered their high-yield period this year, resulting in significant growth in fruit set. Secondly, we have implemented standardized planting management throughout our operations, which not only drove the increase in production but also guaranteed the quality of our fruit.”

“The reason we can stand firm in the midst of increasingly fierce market competition is mainly due to the fact that, first of all, we run an integrated operation, where blueberries picked off the tree will be immediately sent to our own packing houses. After being cooled, processed and packaged, they will be delivered to the destination in the cold chain. Moreover, in order to best meet the individual needs of different consumer groups, we have classified the blueberry varieties.”

“At this stage, Meimeida markets blueberries to commercial supermarkets in first-and second-tier cities in China, as well as large-scale e-commerce platforms, through general agents in various market areas. In addition to fresh blueberries, we also offer deep processed products such as dried blueberries, blueberry jam, and blueberry cakes. In view of the increasingly strong domestic market demand, we will focus on marketing in the Chinese market in the next 2 to 3 years."
