Compostable mesh and laser labeling for avocados

"We are getting rid of all plastic by 2020"

A project to stop using plastic in avocado packaging has been presented at the Smart Agrifood Summit in Malaga.

The Malaga-based company Alcoaxarquia, a tropical fruit producer with plantations in Spain and Peru, has already started using 100% compostable natural fiber meshes made from corn waste, and will resort to laser labeling for its fruit.

"We are already making the first shipments of laser-labeled fruit in compostable meshes to Germany and Austria," says José Antonio Alonchel Jr. "The demand is very high."

"We launched this initiative three years ago, when we saw the need to bet on a more sustainable project," says the producer and exporter.

"Starting in July, we will replace all the plastic packaging machines by others for compostable containers, since our goal is to get rid of all plastic by 2020."
