The new summer Red Kalesi orange campaign has just started. The variety is the Ruby Valencia Late, which has orange peel and ruby red flesh.
"This is our second commercial campaign with this variety, and the prospect is to harvest and sell around 250,000 kilos in Europe, mainly in Italy, France, Spain and Canada," says Francisco Guanter, technical director of the Valencian company Citrus Nostrum, which has been a pioneer in the cultivation and sale of this variety.
The production plots are located in the provinces of Valencia, Alicante, Seville and Huelva, so the company can thus guarantee a stable supply during the marketing period. "The first shipments have been highly appreciated by customers and we hope to be able to keep offering them our service by having this variety for between 6 and 8 more weeks," explains Francisco Guanter.
The Red Kalesi brand, under which these oranges are sold, is introducing the new slogan "The Dragon Energy". In addition to the Ruby Valencia Late, Citrus Nostrum also cultivates and markets the Cara Cara and the Navel Kirwood varieties, which have similar characteristics, both organoleptic and nutritional, and which will allow the supply of pigmented oranges under the Red Kalesi brand during the winter months.
"We intend to inform our customers and the consumers about the important differences and benefits of these oranges, when compared to conventional ones. The main difference is the red pulp, which is due to its high lycopene content. Lycopenes are a source of folic acid and vitamin B9, which protect you from cardiovascular diseases, fight cholesterol, protect you against ultraviolet rays, stimulate the production of collagen, act as an antioxidant and fight aging. Of course, they also provide a lot of fiber and vitamin C," says the exporter.
Although the Spanish citrus season has been one of the most difficult in recent memory due to the low demand and strong pressure on prices, this company still hopes to be able to stand out with its brand, given its high added value.
"Although the Ruby Valencia Late orange is being grown in other countries, we have the advantage of being the first to have bet on it. It is true that the orange campaign has so far been very difficult, and we are aware that, in these circumstances, the prices of conventional oranges always end up dragging down those of products with a higher added value; however, we have great prospects for the Red Kalesi brand, and we hope it will get its rightful place in the markets," says Francisco Guanter.
