On 28 May, Dutch auction house, Alvantho, will auction off the first of the new potatoes. According to Kees Bijl of Bijl Aardappelen, these new potatoes will make their way to Dutch wholesalers and retailers after the auction.
"Frieslanders and Doré sales, in particular, are decent. Prices are staying at a good level. For example, the auction price of Frieslanders is at a stable level of about EUR0,50. This is, of course, thanks to the rain. The potatoes could not be completely grubbed. Nicer weather was expected this week which will increase the supply," Kees says.
"Packers are cautiously loading new potatoes to pack next week. These are, however, still only occasional sales. The amounts are also still small. There are some remnants of imports from Southern Europe on the market. There is some supply from Germany too. Tholen not only offers Dorés and Frieslanders. The area also supplies Première, Eigenheimer, and Bildtstar varieties."
No potatoes are yet being sold to the supermarket channel. "The potatoes' peels have not yet set. The first plots have since been sprayed. This is the catalyst to supply set peel potatoes by the beginning of July. If everything goes well, there will also be more continuity in sales," concludes Kees.
