According to data provided by the Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service, SIAP, grapefruit production in Michoacan has reached historic figures during the first four months of 2019, doubling the production of the previous year. Michoacan went from producing 16,728 tons of grapefruits in 2018 to 32,570 tons in 2019.
This number has consolidated Michoacan as the second biggest producer of grapefruit in Mexico, behind Veracruz.
According to the information of the Secretariat of Rural Development and Agricultural food, Sedrua, the Michoacan's grapefruit production is mainly destined for the export to Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, and South America. The state agency also states that there were already 2,000 hectares of certified organic grapefruit in the state.
