Stone fruit campaign in full swing at Aop Luce

"The summer campaign at Aop Luce is finally in full swing for what concerns both tomatoes from the Fondi-Sperlonga plain and stone fruit from Caserta," explains Giacomo Galdiero, managing director at Aop Luce.

"Things definitely improved as temperatures rose over the past week - Brix levels and average grades are increasing and consumption is also livelier. Early produce of a higher quality is now available."

"From now on, we are expecting volumes to be higher by 20% compared to 2018, almost in line with summer 2017. The dry and mild weather during blossoming helped us as, despite the abundant rain in May, there were no rot or Monilia problems."

"The heavy rain in May disrupted the production plans for very early apricot, peach and nectarine varieties, delaying commercialization by at least fifteen days. In this first phase, 30-40% of the apricots and nectarines was wasted due to cracking."

"Our productions come from central and southern Italy, where our partners are located. The summer campaign starts in early May and continues to late September. We start with fruit from Puglia and Calabria and continue in June, July and August with that from Campania, ending in September with fruit from Sicily."

"Soon the extension of our production facility will be ready. It will cover around 4,000 sq m, boasting state-of-the-art units that can hold over 3,000 tons destined to storing Annurca apples and stone fruit."

"We are hoping for the heat to push consumption, so as to absorb the high quantities expected for the remaining part of the campaign."
