China: Celery enters market in large volumes, price falls below 1 yuan

The price of celery showed a downward trend in the first half of June. Prices were around 0.5-1.2 yuan [0.07-0.17 USD] per 0.5 kg at the end of May, but dropped to 0.4-0.8 yuan [0.06-0.12 USD] per 0.5 kg in two weeks. The wholesale price of celery in Xinfadi Market recently dropped to 0.7-0.8 yuan [0.05-0.06 USD] per 0.5 kg. The retail price is around 2.5 yuan [0.36 USD] per 0.5 kg. People in the industry stated that the celery price has bottomed out and is expected to slowly recover towards the end of this month.

The recent drop in prices was quite obvious last week. The price was only around 0.7-0.8 yuan [0.05-0.06 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is a decline of 70% in comparison with the price of 1.8-2.1 yuan [0.26-0.35 USD] per 0.5 kg around this time last year. The main reason for the sudden drop was the simultaneous supply from many different celery production areas. Market supply greatly increased and the price naturally dropped. Most of the celery currently sold in Beijing Market comes from local production areas in Daxing and Tongzhou, as well as production areas in Tianjin, Langfang in Hebei, and Baoding. The sudden growth in supply volume resulted in a rapid decline of the celery price.
