The Dutch garlic season has started at Best of Four again. "Next week, the first fresh Dutch garlic will go out to clients again, " says grower, Arjan Biesheuvel. He is from cultivation company of the same name in Slootdorp, the Netherlands.
The first crop of garlic is, however, from the south. There, Biesheuvel grows the product in partnership with another Dutch company, Compliment BV. Next week will be garlic from North Holland's turn.
"There was a reasonable harvest in Brabant. But, I am concerned about North Holland. The rain has caused a real growth explosion. More rain is expected. This makes it unclear whether we can harvest on Monday," says Arjan.
According to the grower, there will be no shortage of demand. "Most buyers have already approached me a few times. They want to know when we will get started. Dutch garlic is not comparable to the Chinese product. Despite this, we can promote it if the Chinese garlic prices are high."
Biesheuvel sells most of its Dutch garlic to the Dutch retail sector. They do this via Best of Four. However, a lot of the garlic finds its way to Germany via exporters. "We are starting on a slightly higher price level than last year," the grower says.
In about ten days, the entire garlic area will be harvested. The Dutch garlic is available until the end of the year, thanks to CA cells.
