The crop's export accounts for 10.8% of Spain's total exports

Pepper cultivation is gaining ground in the Spanish Region of Murcia

Pepper cultivation is becoming increasingly important in the Region of Murcia. According to the president of the Alhóndigas department of Proexport, Mariano Zapata, the possibility of creating a department specific to this crop is being discussed.

"Up until May, we have been harvesting fairly good quality peppers, and the supply has also been adequate to meet the market demands. This has resulted in good prices being paid in the first weeks of the pepper campaign in the Region of Murcia. Unlike in other years, there has been no overlap with the productions of Almeria, whose arrival had been delayed in other campaigns," says Zapata.

This balance between the supply and the market demand has resulted in prices standing 30% above the usual levels.

In 2018, 80,527 tons of peppers were exported, generating 100.7 million Euro. On a national level, Murcia's peppers account for 10.8% of Spanish exports. Germany, France and Italy, in this order, are the three main destinations for the region's pepper production, which amounts to around 176,000 tons.
