Mercabarna expects 9% increase in fruit sales

According to a study carried out by the Fruit and Vegetable Guild of Mercabarna, fruit sales this summer are expected to increase by 9% compared to the previous year, reaching 235,000 tons.

The launch of new products, such as melon-shaped watermelons and sprouts, or the campaign "Summer Taste with #5Gazpachos", are some of the initiatives intended to showcase "the richness of the fruits and vegetables of the summer season," said Pere Prats, vice president of the Fruits and Vegetables Guild of Mercabarna.

Between the months of May and August, the wholesale market sells between 45% and 50% of the year's entire fruit volume. This is the period when there is also more fruit of Catalan origin available, including peaches, apricots, plums or cherries.

May 2019 came to a close with 64,855 tons of fruit distributed; 12% more than in the same month of 2018, when 57,931 tons were sold.
