In a debate held in the Agroateneo forum of Almería, opened by the leaders of the main trading groups in the province (Unica, CASI and Anecoop, it was concluded that it is necessary to improve the sector's internal organization in order to compete with greater guarantees of success in national and international markets.
In a first estimate, it was calculated that 700 million Euro more could be earned each campaign. The income obtained from the approximately 32,000 hectares of greenhouses that are cultivated in the province of Almeria could increase by around 20 percent.
In other words, for every 1 percent increase in revenue that could be achieved by improving the marketing, the total figure would increase by around 30 million Euro. If the improvement was of 10 percent, the figure would exceed 300 million Euro per year.
The planning of the harvests, the right choice of varieties to be cultivated in each area and in each product, or the joint marketing of all volumes would make it possible to increase the income of the producers by an estimated 25,000 Euro per hectare, thereby significantly improving the profitability of the farms.
There are precedents that prove the feasibility of such ideas. An example is the Italian region of Emilia Romagna, one of the largest producers of pink apples in Europe, which suffered a phenomenon similar to that of Almeria. The union of practically all of its cooperatives in order to sell their productions together led to a price improvement of 30 percent within just two years.
