Danish supermarkets aiming for 30% organic by 2030

The Danish food industry sector considers it possible that, by 2030, 30% of all foodstuffs in supermarkets will be organic. This is the percentage envisioned by branch organization, Økologisk Landsforening. However, to achieve this, product development will really have to get going.

“I do not think it is impossible to maintain the growth we have seen. In the past four years, this has been eight to twelve percent. If all goes well, we will be at 30% by 2030," says Thomas Roland of the Coop supermarket chain.

The Salling Group is also confident that this growth will continue. This, considering the increasing demand for organic products among consumers. Bilka, Føtex, and Netto are all part of the Salling Group.

Rema 1000 confirms this trend. However, they warn that outcomes are difficult to predict. They say, in 2030, the organic share is expected to end up being between 25 and 35%. Here, price developments are also a critical factor.

“Look at carrots. Conventional and organic prices are very much the same. That affects sales," says Rema 1000's Jonas Schrøder. It must also be remembered that large volumes of products are organically cultivated. A lot is being done when it comes to product innovation too.

A good, tasty product at a good price will win over the public at large.
