Florida citrus production continues downward trend

The 2018–19 Florida all-orange forecast released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on June 11 is 71.4 million boxes. The total includes 30.4 million boxes of non-Valencia oranges (early, mid-season and Navel varieties) and 41 million boxes of Valencia oranges.

The June forecast for non-Valencia production is unchanged from the May forecast. Harvest is complete for the included varieties. The forecast for Valencia production is down 1 million boxes from last month. The row count survey, conducted May 29–30, 2019, showed 96 percent of the Valencia rows are harvested.

The forecast for Florida grapefruit production dipped 70,000 boxes to 4.51 million boxes. White grapefruit is at 770,000 boxes, while red grapefruit is at 3.74 million boxes.

The forecast for Florida tangerine and tangelo production declined 10,000 boxes to 990,000 boxes. However, this production level is 32 percent more than last season’s hurricane-affected production of 750,000 boxes.

No changes were reported for California or Texas in any citrus category.
