The Agroecology Service will help improve waste management

Almeria's greenhouses as a model for sustainability

Almeria's greenhouse system has improved its energy processes and resource management, increasing the sustainability of its facilities. Its main source of energy is solar, which also entails savings in water, soil, phytosanitary products, energy and CO2, compared to other cooler production sites.

Going one step further in the process of making vegetable production environmentally sustainable, greenhouse horticultural producers have created an "Agroecology Service" through the Association of Organizations of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Andalusia (APROA). The objective of this service will be to provide advice to Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organizations (OPFH) to help them improve the management of generated waste and facilitate the reporting of uncontrolled spills to the Administration.

As a starting point for this new action, the Agroecology Service has carried out an evaluation through visual checks and interviews with producers, heads of marketers, the auxiliary industry and agricultural waste collection and treatment companies. The APROA Agroecology Service will be in charge of informing the competent Administration about the dumping of irregular waste.

The APROA already has actions in place to promote the improvement of hygiene and cleanliness in the field. The APROA Agroecology Service can be contacted via the telephone number 687 500 400 and the email to report the existence of black spots to the competent Administration. The organization's staff will actively monitor the cleanliness and hygiene in the field and will be alert to those activities that may pose a hygienic or sanitary threat to the horticultural sector.
