The melon campaign is currently in full swing: Every day a lot of honeydew, Galia and watermelons arrive in Germany's wholesale markets. In Mannheim, too, the sweet summer fruits are shaping the seasonal assortment, says the management of Sakin GmbH, which is based there.
Galia melons from Spain are part of the seasonal product range of Sakin GmbH.
"We currently source our watermelons primarily from Morocco," says the managing director. "This week, the first products from Italy will arrive here in Mannheim. The price of watermelons is currently €0.79 apiece. Until last week, the unit price stood at around €0.60, so there is a slight increase."

Nonetheless, the Mannheim dealer expects that prices will gradually decline in line with rising supply. "As soon as Italy and Greece are more present on the market, a corresponding price pressure will arise."
Honeydew and Galia melons
Apart from watermelons, a rich selection of other types of melons characterizes the current fresh assortment of Sakin GmbH. Spain is clearly dominating across the entire product segment, explains the marketer. "At the moment we are increasingly offering honey and Galia melons, which we mostly source from Spain."
Sakin GmbH is now all about melons. Furthermore, the company markets mainly tropical fruits and exotic fruits.
