Italy: Things are looking up for apricots

"It was not just a question of quantities, but also of quality, as apricots had no flavor and had storage problems. May was terrible, as it rained a lot. At Agribologna, our objective is to promote the produce of our partners, and finally quality has improved in the last few days," explained Wainer Marzola, sales manager for Agribologna at Caab.

Varieties such as Luna, Aurora and Wonder Cot have good organoleptic qualities. "Other varieties like Orange Ruby are starting off now and expectations are good. Quantities are considerable and we expect the harvest to be abundant for the medium and late produce."

Prices are still affected by the weather in May - good-quality produce was paid €1.2/kg over the past few days, which is not particularly satisfactory considering the weather and volume issues.

Massimiliano Moretti, sales director at Agribologna

Sales director Massimiliano Moretti added that the produce sold at Caab is mainly destined to shop owners and wholesalers.

"The apricots currently available come from Emilia-Romagna and from Imola, Faenza, Rimini and Ferrara in particular. As for cherries, as there is little high-quality produce available, prices are high - grade 30 exceeded €8/kg."
