US: Stop & Shop rolls out same-day online pickup
The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has launched same-day online pickup for Peapod by Stop & Shop orders at 20 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. The new service enables shoppers to pick up their groceries in as little as four hours. Customers can place an order on and select “Pick-up” at their preferred store, drive to a local Stop & Shop location at their prearranged pickup time and have a store associate load their groceries into the car. Additionally, the offering gives shoppers access to an even bigger selection of grocery items online, among them fresh pre-cut fruit, prepared foods and trays for entertaining.

Walmart Inc will restart a service that offers the delivery of groceries directly to shoppers’ refrigerators - part of its attempts to find unconventional ways to offer cheap and rapid delivery of online orders. Walmart had started testing the service in 2017 with smart security company August Home and third-party courier firm Deliv, which used gig workers to make the deliveries. It ended the test a year later. This time, Walmart will use its own workers, who have been with the retailer for at least a year, and use its own vehicles. Walmart will also use smart entry technology and a proprietary, wearable camera to access shoppers’ homes, the company’s head of U.S. ecommerce, Marc Lore, said, letting customers control access into their home and watch a delivery remotely. Starting this fall, the service will be available to over 1mln customers across three cities - Kansas City, Missouri; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Vero Beach, Florida.

US: to feature dietary information tags
Walmart-owned is employing the dietary preference platform provided by U.K.-based technology company Spoon Guru, which aims to ensure customers with specific dietary requirements can quickly and easily find suitable foods when shopping on the site. The partnership marks the first time that an U.S. e-grocery retailer will provide customers with an on-site option such as this. Now, when shopping on, customers will be able to customize their food searches to include specific dietary attributes, from allergies and intolerances, such as milk or tree nuts, to individual dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian and healthy choices like low saturated fat or high fiber, all at no charge.

Loblaw joins Loop to bring reusable packaging program to Canada
Loop, a circular shopping system designed to reduce single-use packaging, has announced that Loblaw will help bring the first-of-its-kind platform to Canada. With the Loop system consumers can buy a range of common household products from ice cream to laundry detergent in durable packaging that is delivered in a reusable shipping tote. When done with the product, packaging is collected, cleaned and refilled and reused. Beginning in early 2020, consumers participating in the Toronto pilot will be able to have select products from Loblaw’s President’s Choice private label line as well as other leading brands delivered to their homes.

Canada: Metro launches e-grocery in Toronto
In the increasingly competitive game of grocery delivery, Metro is making a move on the Greater Toronto Area. The country’s third largest grocery chain confirmed it had introduced its online grocery shopping service to Ontario. The retailer first launched online shopping in Montreal in October 2016, and later expanded the service to include both the Greater Montreal Area and Quebec City. “We are extremely happy to offer online grocery shopping to our customers in the GTA”, said Joe Fusco, senior vice-president, Metro in a release. “Metro’s online grocery shopping will give customers the opportunity to shop for their favourite products, without having to leave their home.”

Retailer Mega Image continues expansion in eastern Romania
Supermarket chain Mega Image, the leading retailer in Bucharest, will continue its expansion in Romania’s eastern region of Moldova this year by opening four new stores in Iasi, the biggest city in this region. Mega Image entered in this region by acquiring the Zanfir supermarket chain, with ten units in Vrancea and Bacau counties, five of which it has already rebranded as Mega Image. The Mega Image brand thus set foot in Focsani and Bacau. Other Zanfir stores, located in Adjud, Targu Ocna and Panciu, will be remodeled in the second half of this year.

France: Groupe Casino offloads further six stores
Groupe Casino has announced it is selling six ‘structurally loss-making’ stores for a combined tots of €18.3mln. The group announced it is selling a Géant hypermarket in Barberey-Saint-Sulpice to a Leclerc operator. It is also selling a portfolio of five stores, including four Casino supermarkets and one Leader Price, to Groupement Les Mousquetaires. The sale of the stores is expected to be completed in the second half of 2019, subject to competition and regulatory approval, and consultation with employee representative groups.

Poland: Carrefour launches campaign to promote organic products
Carrefour Polska has launched 'BIO for health', a new initiative that forms part of the retailer’s Act for Food campaign to promote organic products with the lowest price guarantee. The campaign also includes a range of educational activities for consumers, to encourage them to embrace a better diet. "Thanks to the latest campaign, we want to educate customers and break down the main barriers that stop them from using organic products, such as prices or a lack of knowledge”, commented Michal Sacha, Carrefour Polska’s director of marketing, digital, IT and e-commerce.

Spain: Mercadona to work with Bringg for online orders
Mercadona is set to collaborate with Bringg to help improve the efficiency of its online delivery. Using Bringg’s platform is aimed at helping Mercadona organise deliveries from its online-focused warehouses to shoppers more efficiently. Bringg’s software aims to help drivers make deliveries faster by optimising the routes they take and how orders’ loading and unloading can be optimised. Discussing the implementation of the software, Mercadona’s online product manager, José Ramón Pérez, said: “We are producing results with both on-time delivery and greater efficiency in all of our operations. And all this will continue to improve as we continue to take advantage of our data.”

Amazon launches kiosks in UK train stations
Amazon is rolling out physical kiosks in train stations throughout London that will sell a rotating range of products. The kiosks are an extension of Amazon’s Treasure Truck concept, that launched in the UK in 2017. Treasure Truck features one item at a time, and customers can sign up to the receive a text notification to let them know when the truck will be in the area. Customers can then pre-order the product to collect from the truck. Products on offer range from food and drink items to trending technology. The concept is currently available throughout the UK in London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Coventry, Southampton, Portsmouth, Windsor, Reading, Maidenhead and Slough. Similar to Treasure Truck, customers will be able to pick up a changing range of products from Amazon’s new kiosks at discounted prices. The kiosks will initially be rolled out to London Bridge, Paddington, Liverpool Street, King’s Cross and Charing Cross rail stations across London.

IGD: Online global growth of 163% predicted by 2023, adding $257bln to food and consumer goods industry
Digital technologies are revolutionising the way the food and consumer goods industry operates and online sales are forecast to grow 163% by 2023 across major markets, according to a new report from research organisation IGD, in association with The Consumer Goods Forum. Looking at how companies can respond to this change and how businesses will utilise digital technology to become more relevant, the report explores three digital retail models of the future and predictions for an increasingly digital food and consumer goods industry. Major grocery ecommerce markets will continue to expand rapidly, growing at almost four times the rate of any other channel. Data highlights from the research include: Asia-Pacific’s online grocery market will grow by 196% by 2023, adding $198bln. North America’s online grocery market will grow by 152% by 2023, adding $38bln. Europe’s online grocery market will grow by 66% by 2023, adding $21bln.

Australia: Woolworths Group invests into strategic partnership with Marley Spoon
Woolworths Group Limited has announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership in the Australian market with Marley Spoon AG, a leading global subscription-based meal kit provider. The partnership includes a A$30mln investment in Marley Spoon by Woolworths Group, via a senior secured convertible note (A$23mln) and issue of Marley Spoon shares (A$7mln). The issue of shares will result in Woolworths Group owning approximately 9% of Marley Spoon and the convertible note is structured to allow Woolworths Group to participate in the growth of the Australian business. The partnership will see both companies working collaboratively to grow both the Marley Spoon and Dinnerly brands in Australia, and to build operational synergies, with an initial exclusive term of five years.

Romanian retail chain Profi develops private label
Supermarket and proximity store chain Profi, controlled by investment fund Mid Europa Partners, will launch a private label for consumer goods in the medium price segment. Thus, starting July, some 600 to 700 products under the brand Profi will be available in Profi supermarkets and proximity stores, Ziarul Financiar reported. The retailer also has a private brand for the low-cost segment, Proxi, but has found that Romanians buy more expensive brands, according to the company’s officials. The new brand is being developed by the Portuguese subsidiary of the US merchandising company Diamond.
