Market Report Austria KW 23/2019:

Strong demand for new potatoes

Since the beginning of the week, potatoes are being harvested in almost all Austrian districts. The yield seems to be good everywhere, although still very modest, as many tubers are still lacking in size due to weather conditions. In Burgenland and Styria, the yield per hectare under fleece production was between 20 and 25 tonnes.

Manageable quantities
For open field production, yields were still significantly lower at around 15 t / ha. In Lower Austria, clearing in the Marchfeld area started last weekend. The yield of the first clearings stands at around 15 t / ha, which is also not too exciting. It means the volumes available are manageable and they are in high demand by retailers. In the next few days, given the warm, humid weather, we expect a corresponding increase in volume.

In Upper Austria, harvesting is likely to start this week as well. At the beginning of the week, producer prices were usually between €40 and 45 per 100 kg. Occasionally, a little more was paid.

Start of the winter onion harvest
The Austrian onion harvest of 2018 is now quickly coming to an end. The very last remaining stocks are likely to be delivered to retailers in the next few days. Price-wise, there are no changes. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box -depending on quality and size- between €70 and 74 Euro per 100 kg has been paid. The first winter onions in Burgenland and Lower Austria are expected to be harvested this week, to be offered for sale in mid-June.

Calm carrot market
The Lower Austrian carrot market is also quite well-balanced this week. A slowly decreasing supply meets quiet but steady demand. Producer prices are holding up well at previous week's levels.
