Suterra, an ally of sustainable agriculture

Pheromones take to the fields

Suterra Europe Biocontrol held its First Suterra Conference at the Barcelo Hotel in the city of Valencia a few days ago. The conference, Pheromones and Sexual Confusion, was aimed at professionals in the agricultural sector, both in the business and administration sectors. This company has become a reference and obligatory ally of sustainable agriculture.

Carlos Colas, commercial technician of Suterra Europe Biocontrol

Cristina Alfaro, the General Director of Suterra Europe Biocontrol, opened the conference. "Pheromones are a young industry when compared to chemical products applied to agriculture. In the 80s there started to be aware and people started to have greater respect for the environment. That's when it started to be studied with more impetus and to see how it could be applied in the field," Alfaro said.

"The effectiveness of pheromones has been proved. They are specific methods against the pests and are respectful of the environment and biodiversity. They are an important tool to help farmers control pests in a very sustainable way," the general director of Suterra Europe Biocontrol added.

Suterra's motto is: work to make a better world, naturally. "We are part of the plant health sector and we want to contribute our grain of sand to take care of the planet," Alfaro stated, adding that they were working to offer and develop tools to farmers so that they can respond to market demands.

The event continued with a technical presentation about Semiochemicals and Pheromones by Dani Casado and Santiago Marti, the Director of Product Development and Product Manager of Suterra Europe Biocontrol, respectively.

During their presentation, they highlighted the use of Puffer, the aerosol that liberates pheromone and does not leave any type of plastic waste in the field, as one of the most important aspects in the growing market for the use of pheromones. This system has become an obligatory reference in this matter. The agricultural sector is more and more committed to these natural substances to combat pests with maximum respect for the environment.

Afterward, Alessandra Moccia and Silvia Aucejo, the Registration Director and one of the members of the registration department of Suterra Europe Biocontrol, respectively, made a presentation about the Global Situation on Pheromone Registration.

Finally, Susana Fernandez, the director of development at SIGFITO, an entity devoted to recycling phytosanitary containers with which Suterra is associated, made a presentation about the collection and recycling of phytosanitary containers. In addition to manufacturing sustainable products, Suterra makes it easier for farmers to recycle their packaging by being their ally and being committed to the environment.

The event highlighted the complexity of the registration of this type of product, and that the current legislative framework in phytosanitary matters needs to be adapted to this type of industry, which is fairly young. Suterra is committed to lead global registers of its active substances and plays an important role in this collaborating with European and international organizations.

The event concluded with a field visit so that the attendees could see first hand the actual application of the product.
