First Fred pears to be presented at Futurpera in Ferrara

"The first fruits of the Fred variety will be on display in late November at Futurpera in Ferrara. Our partners believe that this variety will differentiate supply," explains Alessandro Zampagna, director of Origine Group. He is talking about variety Ch201, which has been selected after 18 years of crossbreeds by Agroscope researchers. Pears have two colors, average grades and they ripen after Abate.

"Tests are currently being carried out and perspectives are good. This variety produces a lot and becomes productive already on the third year - both these characteristics are extremely appreciated by producers. Nonetheless, the main qualities of this fruit are linked to its organoleptic qualities."

Pears have medium grades with a compact flesh yet crunchy and juicy. The flavor is aromatic and sweet yet with a slight acidity. Shelf-life is excellent and so are organoleptic qualities. In addition, it is tolerant to fire blight.

"We have decided to place our bets on this pear due to its organoleptic and aesthetic qualities, and also because of its excellent shelf-life and high productivity. It is an interesting variety for the entire chain, and we think our sector needs new varieties such as this one. We immediately found ourselves at ease working with VariCom and Dalival and we believe that this cooperation will lead to excellent results."
