Information improves consumer trust

Blockchain technology has helped Carrefour increase its sales

The supermarket chain Carrefour has reported that the use of blockchain technology developed by IBM to track its fresh products has led to an increase in sales, namely thanks to the data provided to consumers regarding the origin and handling of the food they buy.

This blockchain technology allows customers to scan a QR code with their smartphones and find out data such as the date of harvest, the location of the farm where the product came from, the date of packaging, the duration of transport and some recommendations for the product's preparation.

In a first phase, Carrefour introduced the possibility of checking information about 20 products through blockchain. After the success achieved, the chain intends to add another 100 items to the system, focusing especially on the products that require greater quality controls.

Despite the initial success, there are still some challenges that the company must address with the support of blockchain technology, such as the case of fruits and vegetables that come from different farms, especially in the case of producers who don't wish to share too much information.
