Expensive Chinese bayberries enter the market

Major production areas of Chinese bayberries are located in Shaoguang, Guangdong; Zhangzhou, Fujian; and Xianju County in Taizhou, Zhejiang. Wholesale traders and farmers from these production areas confirm that Chinese bayberries from Guangdong and Fujian already entered the market in May. The trees barely have any berries left. Rainfall was abundant this year, according to traders and farmers from Guangdong and Fujian. The bayberry harvest was smaller than last year because of these weather conditions. The price was therefore higher than last year. One farmer from Shaoguan stated that the wholesale price of Chinese bayberries in production areas is around 7 yuan [1.01 USD] per 0.5 kg, while the price was only 5 yuan [0.72 USD] per 0.5 kg last year.

Chinese bayberries from Zhejiang and Hunan have not yet entered the market in large volumes. One farmer from Xianju County stated that they only began harvesting in the last few days. The price also depends on the supply volume. The production volume is more or less at the same level as last year. Chinese bayberries require climate-control during transport, which adds to the cost price.
