Italy: Melon and watermelon season looking good

Weather permitting, expectations for the melon and watermelon market are good. The Sicilian campaign has started well, with good demand both in Italy and abroad, but productions from Lazio and Campania are also becoming available. The medium-high prices of Canary yellow melons are justified due to its high organoleptic qualities. The watermelon campaign is just starting, but things are looking good.

"Canary yellow melons are produced all over Sicily. We are making our purchases from a trusted company and I can say quality is excellent. The "100% Italian" sticker leaves no doubt about the origin and its sweet flavor means it is much superior to the produce from Spain or from overseas," explains Claudio Romano, sales manager for Romaneuro (Bari).

"Although the sales price of Italian melons is 20-25% more expensive than that of the Spanish produce, this is justified by the flavor. Not everyone understands this aspect, though. We must also say that melon prices have been increasing a lot in Italy due to a series of factors, including the escalating production costs."

The Canary yellow melon campaign started around 15th-20th May with limited volumes. "Both the domestic and foreign markets .- Czech Republic and the Netherlands in particular - started showing their interest starting from May 23rd. The consumption of melons and watermelons depends a lot on the weather, so the market has woken up now that the weather conditions are more favorable."

As for Cantaloupe melons, the trader reports that "also due to the lack of Spanish produce available, prices are currently on the up."

Watermelon demand seems to be lively from all over Europe. "I was contacted from the UK, from the Netherlands (which usually re-export the produce) and even from Spain."

"Quantities seem to be limited in Morocco, so suppliers have been looking for produce elsewhere. The Italian markets appear to be doing well."

As for local watermelons, fruits are currently coming from Sicily, Latina/Sabaudia and Battipaglia. "Feedback is good, especially for the latter."

"All in all, things are looking good for melons and watermelons. Weather permitting, the season should be going well, now we just have to wait and see."
