First grown in greenhouses, but now planted outdoors

Plenty of early Norwegian cabbage available

The Norwegian production season had a good start. The Norwegian climate with long days and cold nights works miracles for vegetables like cabbage. As a result, the early cabbage varieties can be harvested between May and June. The early cabbage is grown under foil and has a sweet and subtle flavour. The cabbages are smaller, lighter and looser in structure than the later cabbage varieties. They’re not suitable for storage, but should be consumed soon after the harvest. They’re a delicacy, comparable to early potatoes or asparagus.

Horticultural company Huseby in Vestfold grows the young plants in their own greenhouses before they’re planted out of doors throughout March. The plants are protected against frost with foil and acrylic canvas. Vestfold has an ideal climate for early cabbage and the soils of this region are rich in minerals. Huseby uses no chemicals for weed control, but a row weeder to keep the plants free from weeds.
