Poland: Cauliflower season off to a great start

The cauliflower season in Poland is underway and thanks to the great summer-like weather at the moment, the season is looking very promising. There were some worries earlier though, when heavy rains hit the country.

For Polish vegetable exporter Green Best, the cauliflower season started without delay, in the second half of May: “This year the cauliflower season started quite typical and the available quantities are normal for this time of year. If there won’t be drought during the summer, we expect this will be a successful season. The season is actually in full swing already, as we’ve already begun exporting the cauliflowers. The main countries to which we sell it are the Czech Republic, Denmark and the Netherlands.” Kornelia Lewikowska, sales manager for Green Best, explains.

The season is looking great right now, but a few weeks back Green Best wasn’t so sure this would be the case. “We were afraid that the heavy rains that recently hit Poland would harm the cultivation of the cauliflower, but fortunately the produce was never under heavy threat,” Lewikowska says. “Fast forward to today, and the weather is currently warm, which is very good for the growth of cauliflowers. If the weather stays like this, it is difficult to predict what we will be able to export this year. Our quantities are always large though, last year we exported over a million cauliflowers.”

Poland has to keep an eye on its neighbor Germany though, who also produces cauliflower. “Our biggest competitor when it comes to cauliflower is Germany. Sometimes prices in Poland and Germany are very similar and it is difficult to break through with a great offer. However, we have very busy times ahead of us. Cauliflower in Poland will be available until November, so we have to be on top of our game at all times for the rest of the season.” Lewikowska concludes.
