Commercial opportunities for out-of-season Chinese kiwifruit

There are not many considerations for the plantation or supply of out-of-season fruits, but from the perspective of Chinese consumers, the main consideration is the price, which is often several times higher than when the fruit is seasonal. Not all fruits are suitable for out-of-season supply, because storage takes a toll. Are there commercial opportunities for out-of-season Chinese kiwifruit?

Price differences between domestic and imported kiwifruit
The price range of domestic kiwifruit is wide, but the average price is low. Kiwifruit supply to high-end markets is limited. One opportunity for out-of-season kiwifruit is the great difference between the prices of Zespri kiwifruit and domestic kiwifruit, as well as the great consumption power of Chinese consumers. At the same time, however, the Chinese kiwifruit industry must face the challenge of long-term storage.

Suitability of early-season production areas for expansion
Early-season varieties are key to gain a market share. However, the fruit must not be harvested too early. Furthermore, there are many other fruit varieties that ripen and enter the market early. Even though early-season varieties are not considered out-of-season, they still present an opportunity to challenge the position of import fruit in the market.

E-commerce advantages and block chain supply
E-commerce has already permeated most aspects of our daily lives. Many farmers can sell their fruit across thousands of square miles without leaving their orchard. Another popular trend is "block chain supply". In this approach to distribution every individual functions as the center of their own network.
