Russia is the largest buyer of Ecuadorian bananas, as 95.2 million cartons were shipped to that destination in the first three months of the year, i.e. 2.08% more than in the same period of 2018, according to the Banana Exporters Association (AEBE).
The main destinations of Ecuadorian bananas are Russia, the European Union, the United States, and Asia.
The Russian market was opened by Segundo Wong Mayorga, who traded bananas in exchange for fertilizers, and then formed societies and strategies with Russian companies.
The European Union is a conflictive bloc, with which Ecuador experienced the so-called banana war, due to quotas and tariffs that ended up in the courts of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The 28 countries of the EU imported 28.3 million boxes (-15.46%).
The United States is the destination that has registered the biggest drop in the last four years. In 2016, Ecuador placed 14.2 million boxes of bananas in the US in the first three months, while in the same period of 2019 it only sent 10.4 million boxes there.
With China and Japan in the lead, Asia demands more Ecuadorian fruit every year. Between 2018 and 2019, it imported almost 3 million more cartons, a variation of 59.6%, according to AEBE data.
