Prices of Chinese watermelons already declining

Watermelons are popular with Chinese consumers in early May as the temperatures rise. The price of watermelons rapidly rises as well in early May. In some areas the price increased by as much as 30%. More recently, however, the weather has changed and many areas experience heavy rainfall. At the same time, watermelons enter the market in large volumes. Industry specialists predict that the price will quickly drop and remain low until August.

Generally speaking, the season when watermelons mature begins in May and lasts until July. In China, however, watermelon production areas are spread over different climate zones. The supply seasons are therefore different in various production areas. The supply season of watermelons from Dongfang in Hainan is in November and December. The supply season of watermelons from Lingshui Lizu Autonomous County in Hainan is in January and February. The supply season of watermelons from Mang City in Yunnan is in March and April, and the supply season in Baoshan in Yunnan is between March and May. The supply season of Unicorn watermelons from Guangdong and Guangxi is between February and May. The supply season of watermelons from Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang begins around May.
