Market Report Austria, KW 22/2019:

'First producer price for Austrian new potatoes far above normal levels'

In domestic food retailing, the potato supply is coming online slower than originally thought. In the absence of an alternative, retail will have to be supplied for a further week almost exclusively with old goods from France as well as Israeli and Egyptian new potatoes.

At the beginning of the week there were the first goods from the Styrian and Burgenland spring regions. With an consistently abundant approach, the tuber size is usually still very small. The yields per hectare have fallen at around 10 to 15 tonnes. The first producer price, at the beginning of the week, was €60 per 100 kg. In the Lower Austrian regions, such as the Marchfeld, the first large clearings are planned this coming weekend.

Winter onion harvest is delayed
The Austrian onion harvest in 2018 is virtually through; the very last stockpiles are likely to be sold in the next two weeks. With the prices, there was another increase. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box depending on quality and size, now between €70 and 74 per 100 kg is usually paid. Until the new harvest, food retailers have to resort to goods from Egypt, Greece and New Zealand. The winter onion harvest is delayed for another week, due to the weather.

Carrot market stable
No change at the Lower Austrian Carrot Market. The marketing of the 2018 harvest is proceeding according to plan. Supply and demand are currently very well matched. Producer prices are stable at last week's level.
