Pepper transplants over 20 days late in Senise

PGI pepper transplant operations have started in Senise (Potenza) despite the fact that summer is not showing its face.

"There is a delay of over 20 days which of course means the fresh produce will become available later on, also leading to drying problems," explains Alberto Donnaperna, owner of the Pagliarone - Donnaperna company. "Most of the producers do not sell fresh peppers, but dried ones. To dry the products naturally, it needs to be put in a dry and well-ventilated place."

"Had we postponed transplants once again, we would have had problems concerning the ideal temperatures to reach excellent drying also considering that, from mid-August onward, the weather is less sunny and rain increases humidity"

"In my case, pepper transplant operations ended a few days ago, but I know of a few people who have not started yet. I own 45,000 plants with a 80x20 layout (between row and plant). Plants grow visibly from the 20th day while the first fruits appear after over 40 days."

"The snow in early May has led to a considerable drop in temperatures. Peppers need sunlight, warm weather and a temperature of at least 18°C. Despite the fact that the temperature and weather conditions are not ideal yet, we have decided started with transplants. We cannot wait any longer."

"Matera has become increasingly touristy over the past few years and absorbs almost all of the dried product. The Consorzio di Tutela del Peperone di Senise IGP attended TuttoFood in Milan to find new outlet."
