"The onion production season is well under way and the production conditions in 2019 are quite clear. The overall surface area devoted to the plantation of short-day onions declined and so did the production volume of short-day onions. As for the intermediate onions, the surface area in Nanyang, Henan, decreased by 30%; the surface area in Tongxu, Henan, increased by 20%; and the surface area in Anyang, Henan, increased by 25%. The surface area in Cheng'an and Wei County, Hebei, increased by around 15%; and the surface area in Dingzhou, Hebei, increased by 30%.
The crops are currently growing well. Some of the onion plants suffer from yellow dwarf virus, but the influence is minimal. The production volume in Feng County, Jiangsu (as well as Yutai, Shandong) decreased by 40%." This is according to Jack Meng of Jining Greenfarm Import and Export Co., Ltd.
Fresh yellow onions
"The surface area devoted to onion plantation in traditional onion production areas in Jining and Heze, Shandong, decreased by two thirds. Meanwhile, the surface area in new production areas such as Chengwu, Dingtao, Yuncheng, Liangshan, Wenshang, Yanzhou, and Qufu has grown to five times the size of traditional onion production areas. The surface area in Tancheng expanded by 30% and is now at the same level as traditional onion production areas in Hexi and Hedong.
The new production areas in Yi'nan and Yishui, Shandong, expanded by 20%. However, a large number of onion shoots were pulled from production areas in Hexi, so the production volume is expected to decline, but not by much. The surface area in Weifang and Qingdao, Shandong, is similar to last year. Production areas for long-day onions in Heilongjiang, and Ulaanchab,
Inner Mongolia, slightly declined or maintained the same level as last year. Other onion production areas all expanded the overall surface area devoted to onion plantation, in particular in the western parts of Inner Mongolia where the soil is fertile and rent is low. The surface area devoted to onion plantation in Gansu, and locally in Jining, doubled. Looking at the current condition of the onion industry in China, we can conclude that the overall surface area devoted to onion plantation increased in Gansu, northeast China, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang."
"The current purchase price of onions is 0.6-0.65 yuan [0.09 USD] per 0.5 kg. The price nearly doubled in comparison with last year. The price of raw onions was only 0.35-0.4 [0.05-0.06 USD] per 0.5 kg around this time last year. As for onion export, the number of onion orders from Malaysia and Thailand is quite high."
"We export onions to countries all over the world. Many countries in Europe began to import large volumes of yellow onions from China last year. The main reason for this development was the extreme weather in European onion production areas, which caused an overall decline of the onion production volume in Europe, and in the Netherlands in particular. Customer feedback shows that overseas consumers are quite satisfied with yellow onions from China."
