Mersin, a city in southern Turkey grows green plums and exports them to Russia, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Iran.
Producers in Mersin's Silifke district started to harvest greenhouse plums in early March and the season is now over. After sorting them out according to their size, green plums are packaged and sold for 8 to 14 Turkish Lira (1,2 to 2 Euro) per kilo.
Ali Sen, the president of Silifke Plums Producers' Association announced that the harvest is now completed.
Harvest reduced by half
Mustafa Goktas, founder of the association said that producers grow green plums in an area of 800 to 900 hectares. "Every year we harvest 8 to 9 thousand tons of green plums. However, due to cold weather conditions this year, our production was halved. We hope to have a more productive season next year." said Goktas.
