With the long winter and the spring rains on the Ile d’Orléans, producers of small fruits are expecting strawberries to be one or two weeks late. It is quite a long delay given that half of the strawberry production is done in 5 weeks.
Some producers are using new methods to tackle the problem, such as floating tarps on the ground, which help the season start early. “The covers trap the infrared radiation of the sun. It keeps the heat near the plants and helps increase their growth,” explains Louis Gauthier, farmer.
The first strawberries should arrive around the 15th of June.
