Market Report Austria KW 21/2019:

'Growth of domestic new potatoes delayed, onion prices even firmer'

The Austrian food retailing is currently provided predominantly with old goods from France as well as Israeli and Egyptian new potatoes. The available quantities are very manageable and with prices of up to €80, - per 100kg are expensive as well - Spanish new potatoes would certainly be an alternative. The traders try to get along without imports from the Iberian peninsula.

However, the hitherto extremely wet and cold May is delaying the growth of domestic new potatoes. Prices are currently not mentioned. However, the price level should be higher than previous years, given the tight supply situation and high import prices.

Onion prices even firmer
The marketing of the onion harvest 2018 is slowly but surely coming to an end. Most of the warehouses are now vacated and the remaining stock is largely fixed. Free goods are hardly available any more and are searched accordingly. Producer prices were raised again. For onion, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on quality and size, now between €68 and 72 per 100 kg is being paid. The wet and cold weather of the last days, however, is delaying the winter onion harvest. The first winter onions are now expected to be harvested in early June.

Quiet carrot market
The marketing of the carrot harvest 2018 is quiet and unspectacular. A supply that is now manageable is seeing a very good demand. Producer prices have been going up.
