Exotic fruits are becoming ever more popular, they are no longer just a treat at Christmas as in years gone by.
UK importer Jacana Produce has passion fruit from South Africa for the first time this season. "We import passion fruit from Columbia year round," explains Daniel Badger, sales and procurement director at the company. "But one of our South African suppliers has a big supply this year and asked if we would take some."
"The quality is excellent and at size (count) 33 they are larger than what we would normally see. This week (week 21) is when South Africa will start with the big volumes, this will continue for around 4 weeks."
Daniel said that despite the fact that the colour and quality is great it is still difficult to get more for them than passion fruit from other countries, they come in a 2kg box, where as other fruit is in 1.5kg boxes but people don't really want to pay more per box.
Jacana have been receiving passion fruit from South Africa for a while with around 2-3 arrivals per week until now. It is marketed under the Pico brand.
