Ukraine: 2019 record harvest of haskap berries will not lead to price drop

According to Alexander Yarechenko, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Deputy Director for Research of the Institute of Horticulture, NAAS of Ukraine, in 2019 Ukraine will have a record harvest of haskap berries.

“Haskaps are gaining popularity in Ukraine, and the main commercial plantations have not yet entered commercial bearing, so the market volume is rather limited, as well as the offer. According to our estimates, the gross yield of haskaps in 2019 is unlikely to exceed 20-25 tons, ”said the expert.

He notes that the volumes obtained so far should not adversely affect prices: “Concerning the pricing policy, we expect the price to be 150-200 UAH per kg ($ 5.7-7.6 dollars per kg) for high-quality packaged berries in retail networks, that is approximately at the level of the past 2018 ".

According to the expert, the harvesting season and selling fresh haskap this year will last about 30 days, after which the harvesting season and selling blueberries will begin. At the same time for the first time on the market will be available berries of haskap the most delicious varieties in the world, which should appeal to a large circle of consumers.

The volume of haskap production in Ukraine so far is incomparable with the volume of its cultivation in neighboring Poland. Some Polish experts generally believe that Poland is the world leader in haskap cultivation, estimated at 2,000 hectares. In Ukraine, according to market participants, haskap from 60 to 150 hectares. Moreover, only one enterprise has large industrial arrays of this culture. Almost all market participants fear the absence of a market for this berry, which hinders the expansion of the area under it.
