First potatoes of the Berber variety already marketed

New potato season in the Palatinate has begun

While new potatoes are being sold from abroad in supermarkets and discounters, the first "Neie Grumbeere" have been harvested in the Palatinate some days ago. These are only available -for the time being- in specialized stores, like Tony's Palatine Hofmarkt in Dannstadt. Greengrocer Tony Kleinert, owner of the Dannstadter Grumbeerexpress, sources these directly from local producers.

Shortly before the weekend, he brought the first Palatinate Gold of the Berber varieties from farmer Heiko Ohlinger in Gronau. The mild climate and the fertile soil in Dannstadt-Schauernheim are ideal for this specialty, Tony Kleinert knows.

Now available in stores: "Neie Grumbeere" / Picture: Tony Kleinert.

For many years, the Pfälzer new potatoes are considered a secret delight by insiders and Palatine connoisseurs. Here, the cultivation of early varieties with special cultivation technology has a long tradition. The first new potatoes are eagerly awaited by Palatine gourmets and mostly simply eaten straight out of the saucepan with a little butter, salt and of course a glass of young Riesling.
