Hass avocados produced in Peru are exported in large quantities to Asian countries, including China and Japan. This year, the country has exported 8,000 tons of avocado to Asia and the average price could have increased by up to 20% over the 2018 season, reaching up to $ 2.4 per kilo, according to the Hass Avocado Producers Association of Peru (Prohass). The president of Prohass, Daniel Bustamante, said that this increase in value could be due to the fact that the supply of avocados in the world market has decreased, and demand continues to grow.
Peru stands as one of world's leading avocado exporters. According to estimates, this year the will export 290,000 tons or avocado, 14% less than in the previous season, which covers the months of March to August. It should be noted that Europe is the largest importer of Peruvian avocados, with 60% of its total production.
Bustamante said that the production of avocados is expected to increase in the coming years, mainly due to the new cultivation areas that are now at an early stage, but that will increase the production. This will allow Peru to enter new markets.
He also said he was confident the world demand for avocados would continue to grow, and that this year they would begin negotiations to export this fruit to two new Southeast Asian countries: Korea and Thailand.
