Panama: Banana strike threatened unless salary agreement is reached with Chiquita

The banana industry in the province of Bocas del Toro, specifically the district of Changuinola, is on the verge of an indefinite strike. The Trade Union of Banana, Agricultural and Allied Industries Workers (Sitraibana) decreed an indefinite strike, starting Monday, May 20, if it does not reach a salary agreement with the Chiquita Panama LLC company.

The strike was agreed on last Friday, May 10 and it will begin at 6:00 am next Monday in all banana divisions of the company, 21 packer facilities, and transporters.

The union demands a 35% salary increase and has been negotiating with the company for about two months without reaching an agreement. Negotiations continue.

Last year, workers called for a strike to demand that the company comply with the collective agreement. The conflict was resolved through the mediation of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development.
