Apple stocks South Tyrol

'Good volumes, nearly two-thirds Golden Delicious'

According to the surveys of Assomela and the Chamber of Commerce, South Tyrolean cooperatives as of 1 May had stored a total of 446,738 tonnes of dessert apples. At the same time in 2018 and 2017, this was 170,410 tonnes and 419,607 tonnes respectively. Nearly two-thirds of the stocks in stock are Golden Delicious (277,580 tonnes), followed by Red delicious (36,334 tonnes), Braeburn (28,822 tonnes) and Granny Smith (25,319 tonnes), in order of quantity, according to a report from the Südtiroler Bauernbund.

A direct comparison with the past year appears difficult because of the very small harvest at that time - except for the Granny Smith variety, the 2017/18 amounts were consistently far lower than they are currently. If we use the marketing year 2016/17 as a comparison, then the quantities for Red Delicious and Gala are lower than at that time; for all others they are higher. The Kanzi variety is not named separately in the statistics; it is put in the "other varieties", but this is also in the plus.

Course of the marketing season
In April, a total of 151,820 tonnes of apples were taken from the stocks in the Trentino / South Tyrol region. More than 40 percent of these were Golden Delicious apples (65,554 tons), followed by Red Delicious (22,183 tons) and Fuji (12,208 tons).
