2018 was a successful year for the Spanish watermelon sector, with record exports and average prices, as confirmed by the report prepared by the statistical service Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency), with codes of the Tariff Integrated of the European Communities - TARIC.
Watermelon exports stood at 861.95 million kilos, 128% more than ten years ago and 16.23% more than in the previous year. The income generated by those exports reached 428.62 million Euro, a figure that triples the profits of 2009 and represents an increase of 32.15% over the previous year.
The sale price also reached an extraordinary 0.497 Euro / kg; 13.73% more than that obtained in 2017.
The main export destination for Spanish watermelons in 2018 was Germany, with 372.6 million kilos; 43.23% of the total. The country paid a total of 172.71 million Euro, with an average price of 0.464 Euro per kilo.
France was the second largest buyer of Spanish watermelons, with a volume totaling 144.44 million kilos worth 75.53 million Euro, and an average price of 0.523 Euro per kilo.
The United Kingdom ranks third. Last year, it bought a total of 79.9 million kilos, for which it paid 38.47 million Euro, with an average price of 0.481 € / kg.
The fourth place in the ranking is for the Netherlands, which purchased 52.5 million kilos of watermelons worth 26.45 million Euro, with an average price of 0.504 Euro per kilo.
The fifth largest customer for Spanish watermelons was Sweden, which bought a total of 34.86 million kilos for 18.65 million Euro in 2018, paying an average price of 0.535 Euro per kilo.
