The supply of potatoes to the Chinese market in 2018 can be divided in three groups: potatoes grown during 2017 and kept in storage, potatoes grown during the spring of 2018, and potatoes grown during the autumn of 2018. The market supply was dominated by 2017 potatoes during the first 4 months of 2018. The spring potatoes dominated from May until August, and the autumn potatoes dominated from September until December.
The overall price of Chinese potatoes was first low and then high in 2018. The price of potatoes produced in 2018 was relatively high. The trade surplus greatly reduced in 2018.
Predictions for the Chinese potato market in 2019
The potato market will be dominated by spring potatoes and autumn potatoes between May and December. Farmers generally grow vegetables based on the price in the last season. If the potato price is high, then farmers expand the surface area devoted to potato plantation.
The price of potatoes was much higher after June 2018 than it was in 2017. Potato farmers made a healthy profit. They are therefore more likely to expand the surface area devoted to potato plantation. The supply volume is expected to increase, and the price is expected to fall.
