The starting signal for the southern German coal campaign has already sounded: Shortly before Mother's Day, the first white and savoy cabbage has already been harvested in Baden-Württemberg. From next week, the cabbages should also be offered for the first time in regional food retail. "We even started one week earlier than in2018."
Double kilo prices
The remaining stock (red, white and savoy cabbage) is currently priced at 1 Euro / kg. In the previous year around this time, the kilo price moved by 0.40-0.50 euros. The goods are scarce, but the demand is certainly there. According to experience, stored cabbage vegetables will sell well throughout the month of May. The new product is even better, at a retail price of 0.80 cents per kg should be possible," says a grower and direct marketer.
Good conditions for a new harvest
Overall, the items in stock are scarce, but the quality is very good. Therefore, it is to be expected that the new goods will start with high prices. The new harvest is also of an excellent quality: "Because we had little frost, the vegetables grew evenly and nicely." It now remains to be seen whether the consumer will actually go for regional cabbages, says the producer. "In about 2 weeks, this will be clearer and it is pretty cool right now, which is quite positive with regard to cabbage consumption."
