The Málaga-based cooperative Trops, dedicated to the cultivation and marketing of tropical fruits, has started its international expansion with 1,500 new hectares devoted to avocado cultivation in Tavira, in the south of Portugal. With this 'transnational' expansion within the Iberian Peninsula, a considerable increase in the production of avocados is expected for the next season.
The manager of Trops, Enrique Colilles, confirmed that they have already earned the trust of approximately 80 percent of the producers in Portugal, who are already Trops partners. Colilles predicts that the production will increase by between 10 and 15 million kilos.
The new facilities in Tavira will be built in two phases and each of them will occupy an area of 4,000 square meters, where the harvest will be managed and handled. In addition to these facilities in Portugal, Trops has acquired new warehouses in Motril in order to manage the avocado harvest from the Costa Tropical of Granada, which is already in progress.
Thanks to the Cooperativa Trops, growers know for certain that their production will be sold at fair prices, while receiving the operational and logistical support of the organization.
