Cees Bruyn, Staay Food Group

"Besides Egyptian red onions, we also have yellow onions this year"

Staay Food Group usually starts importing red onions from Egypt in May. However, this year this Dutch importer will also be offering their Egyptian supplier's yellow onions. This is due to the empty European market.

"There are no more Dutch red onions. The yellow onions are running out too. So, we find ourselves in an unusual market," says Cees Bruyn, an Account Manager at Staay-Hispa.

Staay-Hispa already received its first yellow onions from Egypt three weeks ago. Since then, the first red onions have also arrived from that country. "This year we sent a sorting line to our Egyptian shipping agent for the first time. So, with this, we now have a headstart."

"The onions now arrive perfectly sorted. This means we can now also deliver different sizes faster. We offer the onions in 10kg packs. We also offer them in big bags for the processing industry," says Kees.

"When it comes to quality, the Egyptian product looks great. The country is already busy with an impressive process of professionalization with onions. This is also the case with other products. The Egyptian climate is excellent too."

"Normally, we import the onions from May to September. However, last year, we went through as far as December with the red onions," Kees concludes.
