Know App: informing operators and final consumers about apples

A three-year European communication and information campaign on apples will take place in Italy and Spain between 2019 and 2022: Know App is promoted by Assomele, an Italian producer association that represents around 75% of the domestic apple production and 15% of the European production.

The campaign, acronym of "Knowing European Apples", is based on the knowledge that the competitiveness of the EU and Italian agricultural sectors can be strengthened through the promotion not only of the products but also of their production methods, which are both sustainable and safe.

"Our apple production system is in fact characterized by the special attention we reserve to research and innovation to meet consumer tastes and needs while respecting the environment and safeguarding the social and economic system of our territories," explained Giulia Maontanaro, international relations manager at Assomela.

With this in mind, we wanted to provide target subjects (producers and traders) with suitable information on apples so as to optimize in-store product management. Know App also has the objective of informing final consumers, making them more aware as regards what they are purchasing.

"Knowing what European agricultural production means results not only in improved product management but also in the transmission of knowledge and information to consumers so they can be more aware of what they are purchasing."

The press conference held at Macfrut on 8th May 2019.

During the campaign, information activities will take place in Italy and Spain for fresh produce managers from the main retail chains. In addition, study-trips to Trentino-Alto Adige will be organized to showcase the Assomela companies part of the project - VOG (Marlene), VI.P (Val Venosta) and Melinda/La Trentina. Training will be provided on how to take care of apples in stores, recognize the different varieties, their rotation and shelf-life as well as on production, control and traceability methods.

The project also includes promotional events, the creation of a dedicated web portal and the distribution of promotional material.
