China: "Imports of durian and mangosteen from east Thailand ending"

Thailand is one of the larger suppliers of fruit for China. The two most important fruit varieties are durian and mangosteen. One importer provided an overview of the current market conditions for these fruits: "Thailand enjoyed an abundant harvest of durian and mangosteen this year. Chinese market demand for these two fruits is still high. Thailand exports around 90% of the durian to China. Thailand opened many new top-quality facilities for fruit processing to encourage the export of durian and mangosteen to China."

"The purchase price showed an almost constant growth this season with the exception of a brief drop. People in the industry were quite content with this price development. The durian and mangosteen season is still in progress in the east of Thailand, but the end of the season is approaching fast. The export volume from the east of Thailand is growing smaller. Some of the larger processing factories have already halted operations. The durian and mango season in the south of Thailand begins in June. The quality of durian and mangosteen from east Thailand is better than from south Thailand, but the production volume is similar."

"Another important durian supplier for the Chinese market is Malaysia. However, Malaysia only has permission to export frozen durian to China and not fresh durian. Furthermore, Vietnam also produces large volumes of durian, but Vietnam also lacks an agreement on durian exports to China. Countries that export mangosteen to China include Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia. The import volume from Indonesia is quite high, especially around the Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019].
